India Pays Tribute to Syama Prasad Mookerjee on the 73rd Anniversary of His Death

Prime Minister Narendra Modi led nationwide tributes on the 73rd anniversary of Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee's death. Leaders including Amit Shah and Devendra Fadnavis remembered the Bharatiya Jana Sangh founder's campaign for the complete integration of Jammu and Kashmir and linked the 2019 abrogation of Article 370 to his vision of national unity.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi led tributes across the country on Tuesday as India observed the 73rd anniversary of the death of Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee, commemorated as Martyrs' Day. The occasion marked the remembrance of the nationalist leader who died in 1953 and is regarded by many as a key figure in the movement for national integration.

Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee founded the Bharatiya Jana Sangh and resigned from the cabinet of Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru over differences regarding policies related to Jammu and Kashmir. He later entered the region without a permit to press for its complete integration with the rest of the country and was subsequently taken into custody, where he died in 1953.

Leaders across the political spectrum joined the commemorations. Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis paid homage to Dr. Mookerjee and highlighted his opposition to the existence of separate constitutional and symbolic arrangements in Jammu and Kashmir. They recalled his campaign against the idea of separate constitutions, separate heads of administration and separate flags.

The leaders also linked the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019 with what they described as the fulfillment of Dr. Mookerjee's vision of national unity and complete integration of Jammu and Kashmir with India.
